The
Remnants
|
Hanging out by the pool tables in Churchill's talking
with friends. Bands have been playing all night and we wander
over now and then and check them out and wander back to the other side
again. Another band has taken the stage and we become conscious
of the music again. We head towards center stage and begin to
listen and watch.
This band is good. We look at each other, smile, and
nod our heads. A peek at the set list - looks like it's the
Remnants. Commit that to memory. This band is good. But who
are they?
Much to our surprise The Remnants turn out to
be a local band. This time of night you expect to be seeing
national acts. A bit of research reveals that they describe
themselves as a "generic rock quartet out of North Miami offering up
another sad rehash of three-chord rock and roll à la the Rolling
Stones." Well, maybe three chords and maybe Stones influenced but
this band is kicking ass. Generic is not a good word here.
This is some fine punk rock. Iggy, The MC5, Johnny Thunders and The
Pretenders come to mind. Blend them together and you get the idea.
The Remnants are Cynthia DuVall (vocals),
Russell Moore (drums), Jim Potts (guitar) and Dominic Sirianni
(bass). From what we can gather the band is made up the "the
remnants" of a bands such as The Pin-Ups, the Hooples, and
Avarice.
The band has a self titled CD described as
"Soft-punk in the vein of a gaggle of love children spawned from an
ill-fated sexual union of ABBA and the Dead Boys. Six songs from Miami,
Fl's least favorite sons and their worst daughter. These losers have
been making noise in SoFl for the last two years and this is what they
came up with." You can pick up a copy at Blue
Note Records in Miami or on-line by clicking here
We've heard that they also released an EP
titled "A Few Evenings with the
Bastard" which was produced by Miami's own Rat Bastard.
Apparently this was released on vinyl only????
The band has a few mp3s available on their website . one of which is a
song called "The Wait." We downloaded it earlier and much to our
surprise it was one of the numbers that they played the other night
that we really all liked. Grab it while you can!!!! It's a
Pretenders cover done Miami style!
